About Alec

Before starting his own practice, Alec Summerfield worked for three different federal sector labor unions over a span of eight years. Most recently, Summerfield worked as a Staff Attorney for the National VA Council, American Federation of Government Employees, AFL-CIO. In that role, I litigated and advocated on behalf of dozens of AFGE locals throughout the VA. This included arbitrations, disciplinary actions, providing in-house legal counsel, and other administrative representation. Prior to his at AFGE, Summerfield worked as an Associate General Counsel at the National Association of Government Employees Federal Division, SEIU for two years. At NAGE, Summerfield handled a variety of matters ranging from leading bargaining sessions to Merit System Protections Board appeals to cases before the DC Public Employees Relation Board. He actually began his career as a law clerk and organizer at the National Federation of Federal Federal Employees, IAM, AFL-CIO. At NFFE, Alec developed a multitude of skills performing organizing and legal work.

During that time working in the labor movement, Summerfield  performed a variety of pro-bono legal work on behalf of various community groups and individuals in the Baltimore area. This includes filing a class action lawsuit on behalf of thousands of unemployed workers in 2021 who risked losing their unemployment due to then Governor Larry Hogan’s proposed cuts. He has also worked with multiple families in fighting for information on their loved ones who are incarcerated or died in police custody.

Summerfield Legal isn’t in the business for prestige. Alec became a lawyer because he genuinely believes in strong advocacy for working class people on a variety of issues. Together, we can fight and win just outcomes whether you are a labor union, a union member, or an individual from the broader community.
